I was invited to attend the 4th SCL AWARDS® and the 2023 SCL Oscars® reception. Always a pleasure to attend such events to meet our peers that are nominated and winners, and all of our colleagues in the industry. It’s always such a pleasure and an emotional moment to hear Academy Awards® winning composer John Williams give a speech. I really enjoyed my conversations with composer Justin Hurwitz (Babylon). We nerded out on MOOG synthesizers. And a great a deep conversation with composer Volker Bertelmann (All Quiet on The Western Front) who the next day, ended up becoming this year’s Academy Awards® winner. We talked about our shared experience of going through a burnout, and the importance of finding balance, in a business that require always more from us, to the demise of our own mental and physical health. But we both came to the conclusion that we wouldn’t be who we are today without having to go through such painful experiences, and in some ways, surviving it changed us for the better. I can only hope one day it leads on the same path that it did Volker. Winning an Academy Award®! Cheers to you dear Volker.
